A new presentation of works by Italian sculptor and architect Umberto Bellardi Ricci rejuvenates and pushes abstraction to a fresh level. Simple monumental forms knit together a balance of complementary elements that appear to use more space than materials. Space is, after all, Bellardi Ricci’s ultimate material. Sheet steel gains dimensionality with strategic folds and warmth is added with the integration of light. Glass or marble juxtaposes with mundane materials such as I-beams or concrete. The works’ spatial precision and expansiveness alter the experiential nature of his pieces, allowing for certain complexities of structure and color. The forms of Bellardi Ricci’s furniture and lighting can be looked at but are meant to be seen in relation to the environments that they enhance.
